THE STORY:

In 1722, Britain enacted the Pine Tree Law mandating that any white pine tree greater than 12 inches in diameter was property of the British government. These trees were used for ship building and were considered one of the most important resources of the day.

Surveyors would hatchet a symbol, known as the King’s Broad Arrow mark, into these trees. Even if the tree was on private property, it could no longer be used by the colonists. That is, until Ebenezer Mudgett took a stand against the unjust law and, with his fellow citizens in Weare, New Hampshire, lead the Pine Tree Riot.

This courageous act inspired other events, such as the Boston Tea Party, with the pine tree being a symbol of rebellion widely used on flags during the American Revolution.
