THE STORY:

Gemütlich (Guh - MOOT - Lik): Pleasant and cheerful.

In 2013, when Able Ebenezer was still being assembled, founders Carl and Mike received an unexpected phone call from a man named Otto Kuhn. Otto was the Brewmaster at the nearby Anheuser-Busch brewery in Merrimack, N.H. With over 30 years of brewing experience, Otto had achieved legendary status in the beer community. In fact, when Otto retired in 2016 a Budweiser Clydesdale was named after him.

Disappointed that Able Ebenezer was not yet open, Otto offered, in a thick German accent, "Then I would like to show you my brewery and welcome you to the community." On that visit Otto taught Carl and Mike the proper way to taste and evaluate a beer, and gave them foundational wisdom of what makes a great brewery.

Once Able opened its doors, Otto was a frequent visitor. On one busy night, Otto pulled Carl and Mike to the side and gave them a compliment they would never forget:

"There is no word in English for what you've built, but in German it is called Gemütlich. Not just a comfortable atmosphere, but that combined with a friendly conversation while drinking a great beer in a cheerful place. It's everything together.”

Able has always taken this idea to heart; to build a pleasant and cheerful place; a place where everyone feels welcome. In a word, Gemütlich.
