THE STORY:
Lady of the Lake was built by the Winnipesaukee Steamboat Company of Lakeport, N.H. in 1849. She was one of the first major steamboats on Lake Winnipesaukee, changing the way people lived and worked in the surrounding region, as well as making Lake Winnipesaukee the tourism destination it is today.
After completion of the larger, faster Mount Washington steamboat in 1872, Lady of the Lake continued her service until finally being retired in 1893. Soon after, she was ceremoniously “buried” beneath the waves of this lake at Glendale Bay, not far from the route she served for several decades. Forty feet below the surface, her hull is still intact & in near-perfect condition, and today is a popular destination for divers. Her famous figurehead, carved from a single log of NH white pine and painted white & gold, is now on display at the New Hampshire Historical Society in Concord.
The Lady Of The Lake label is a collaborative rebrand to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the M/S Mount Washington, and the history of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. We raise a glass to the history & service of Lady of the Lake, and are honored to carry on her legacy.
